Don’t worry if you missed the deadline to register for your NSC/SC exams! You have another chance! The Department of Basic Education has extended the registration period until 20 February 2024.

What is the Second Chance Matric Programme?

The Second Chance Matric Programme is for those who want to improve their matric results or pass their matric exams. You can apply for this programme if you have:

  • Written matric exams before and failed one or more subjects
  • Attended classes at a registered institution/school during the academic year

What are the requirements for the Second Chance Matric Programme?

Senior Certificate (SC)

You can qualify for the SC if you are:

  • An adult learner who is 21 years or older and has:
    • A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); or
    • A Grade 9 school report (or the old standard seven) that shows you passed Grade 9 or Standard 7; or
    • A recognised equivalent qualification at NQF Level that includes two official languages
  • An adult learner who is 21 years or older and has an incomplete SC qualification
  • An adult learner who is 21 years or older and has an incomplete National Senior Certificate (NSC) qualification
  • An out-of-school youth who is 18-21 years old and could not finish school due to reasons beyond your control, as confirmed by the Head of Department in the Provincial Education Department

If you have an incomplete NSC, you can choose to complete it or switch to the SC. But if you switch to the SC, you cannot go back to the NSC.

You can also apply for the SC if you have a qualification already but want to improve your results or status.

National Senior Certificate (NSC)

You can qualify for the NSC if you are:

  • A grade 12 learner in 2023
  • A NSC candidate who wants to improve your previous NSC results (you cannot apply if you have changed your certificate to SC)
  • A part-time candidate for the NSC exams
  • Between 18 and 20 years old

What documents do I need to apply for the Second Chance Matric Programme?

You will need the following documents when you apply:

  • A completed registration form (if you apply at the district)
  • A certified copy of your ID or birth certificate
  • A certified copy of your passport (if you are a foreign candidate)
  • A certified copy of your statement of results or grade 12 certificate
  • School reports (if you are 21 years or older and have passed grade 9, 10, or 11)
  • A copy of your previous highest qualification (if you are a repeater candidate)
  • Your examination numbers for any other grade 12 or equivalent exams you have written before

How do I register for the Second Chance Matric Programme?

Registration is easy. Follow these steps:

  • If you want to rewrite SC exams, you MUST register online. Here is the direct link: http://www.eservices.gov.za/
  • If you want to rewrite NSC exams, you should register at your nearest Education District Office.
